One of the fruits of a misspent youth is a grasp of the popular culture that cannot be possessed by those who wiled away the hours in a library at Harvard, Yale or MIT. And, I remember from my many years of television watching a certain Twilight Zone episode - one that is eerily reminiscent of our time. Portrayed in it is a Hitleresque character who incessantly gives speeches that are broadcast on televisions, situated about every ten yards. This demagogue speaks very passionately, and in his effort to indoctrinate his people repeats one buzzword constantly and forcefully: conformity. "Conformity!" he will say, as if it is the greatest characteristic one can exhibit. This often comes to mind when I hear one of our society's favorite buzzwords: diversity. It is used like a mantra nowadays; it's emphasized in schools, and we hear it on TV and radio public disservice announcements - who hasn't heard the phrase, "Remember, our strength lies in our diversity?" Yes, like the despot conjured up by Rod Serling's imagination, we have demagogues and social-engineers among us who would have us think that their cause celebre, in this case diversity, is the greatest condition mankind can aspire to. Diversity as defined by them, that is.
The effects of this misplaced emphasis can be seen everywhere: in those who just recently criticized the Augusta National Golf Club [which hosts the renowned Masters Tournament] for not allowing women to become members. In the effort to coerce the Boy Scouts into accepting avowed homosexuals and girls into it's ranks. In the quotas instituted by universities that place race, sex and ethnicity ahead of merit, in an effort to be politically-correct and/or avoid running afoul of the Federal Government's diversity patrol. And we see it in the lawsuits brought against private businesses by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on behalf of ne'er do wells, who have often falsely alleged discrimination. And, all a business has to be guilty of to be raked over the coals and forced to shell out a pile of money to a deadbeat, is not having a workforce that reflects the "demographic composition" of it's surrounding area. You see, this modern doctrine of diversity dictates that every entity in society, every business, every school, club and organization should be all inclusive; that they should in essence be the SAME in terms of composition. And therein lies the folly of this perverted idea of diversity. Under the pretense of increasing diversity, a model is imposed on every unit of society that increases a type of diversity within that unit, but in doing so makes it like EVERY other unit, thereby decreasing the true diversity of the nation. This is why the barkers of this diversity freak show have even more in common with that Twilight Zone character than you might think. After all, if they're forcing every entity of society to be the same in terms of composition, they're doing nothing but insisting on CONFORMITY. It's forced conformity to their homogenizing theology of diversity.
Now, I'd like to put this is perspective by using an admittedly fanciful, but nevertheless apt analogy. We all know that our planet has been blessed with a collage of bio-diversity. We have millions of different species of animals, insects and plants, and they make this life a good spot more interesting. Let's say though, that we decided that nature wasn't fair; after all, some species dominate others; some have scores of natural enemies and others have none. Some species even drive others to extinction [that's right, it isn't only humans that do that]. And then let's say that we decided that the imperative of egalitarianism deemed that this was a situation the cried out for justice. So, we eliminated all the creatures of this world, and with the marvels of genetic -engineering took genes from each one and fused them all together for the purposes of creating the hybrid to end all hybrids: a beast that would be a combination of all the creatures that had populated that unjust world. Now, the result would be a very bizarre creature indeed, and one that would have a very "diverse" genome. But, of course, we wouldn't have increased bio-diversity. We might have made every member of this new species more diverse within itself, but the fact remains that we would have only ONE species - every creature in the world would be the same. A fanciful analogy? I said it would be. A ridiculous situation? For sure. But is it any more ridiculous than what we're doing now? Is it any more ridiculous to create a hybrid of all animals than it is to create a hybrid of all societal units? Is it any more ridiculous to make every creature's genome the same than it is to make every cultural "genome" the same? Does it make sense to decrease social diversity by making every entity diverse within itself, but virtually identical to every other? Is the aforementioned type of genetic-engineering any less ridiculous than the Dr. Mengeles of diversity's social-engineering? Do we want just ONE species of societal unit in our world?
Now, let's move from a philosophical framing to a very practical one. In very real terms, we have fewer choices because of the tyrannical enforcement of this theology of diversity. If I want to join a single-sex club or organization [especially one that's exclusively male], I now have fewer choices than ever before. If I want to send my child to a single-sex school, I'll now have more difficulty finding one. If I want to run my own business in accordance with the dictates of my conscience, if I want to cultivate a flavor in it that is uniquely my own, I very well may not be able to. All these choices are being eliminated or limited, because we have people among us who want to see their utopian vision for the world forced on the rest of us, and they've managed to gain enough control over the levers of society to do it. But we don't need such social-engineering any more than we need genetic-engineering that creates monsters. What we need is to dispense with the nonsense and the governmental bodies that enforce it. If we don't, a lot more than social structures will become extinct - something far more important will: freedom.
