Joseph Stalin said, “When we hang the capitalists, they will sell us the rope we use.” Of course, his prediction never came to pass because there was nothing inherent in the capitalist economy that ensured its failure – it was his communist system that had the fatal flaw. But as I watch various elements within my nation attack America like cancer cells turning on their body, it occurs to me that if our current enemies, the Islamic Fundamentalists [I’ll call them “IFs”], were to express a similar sentiment history might show them to have been quite prescient indeed. It is no exaggeration when I say that the IFs must be laughing at us. And, quite frankly, I can’t blame them. They want to destroy us, and they know that we should know they want to destroy us. Yet, when they look at the great and powerful nation they aim to wipe off the map, what do they see? They see the American Bald Eagle, locked in a battle for its physical and cultural survival, having grasped thirteen arrows in its right talon so that it matches the left one. But while the right talon points the arrows eastward, the left one has them pointed right at the heart of the great bird.
One of these arrows is opportunistic political whores who masquerade as statesmen. They unfairly condemn their own nation and her military and President, all in a shameless effort to buttress their political fortunes and achieve power.
Another arrow is the people and organizations – like the American Criminal Liberty Union and Amerikans United for the Separation of Church and State – whose every waking moment seems to be devoted to purging every last remnant of the Christian faith from our nation. The IFs no doubt take pleasure in the fact that our soldiers are spilling their own blood to protect those who are spilling their own culture, as the ACLU demands that Los Angeles remove a small cross from its seal. Their amusement at this must transform into incredulous joy as they see that while all this is occurring and while Christian expression of any kind is banned in many of their nations, the same partners in arms are rolling out the red carpet for Islam in the USA, as the ACLU and its kindred spirits have nothing to say about the broadcasting of Muslim prayers in a Michigan town or the schoolchildren in California who are forced to recite Muslim prayers under the guise of historical instruction. I can hear it now, “Those stupid Americans . . . “
The third arrow would be the sorry excuses for judges who act contrary to the Constitution and issue rulings that cause or allow the above to happen. One of these people would be affirmative-action appointee Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who doesn’t even feel compelled to use the Constitution when judging the constitutionality of law. Incredibly, this very embodiment of dereliction of duty actually said, during a speech to the American Constitution Society [a liberal lawyers’ group], that “We [judges, when making rulings] must start looking for inspiration beyond our borders, to the laws and constitutions of other nations.” Of course, the IFs would push her into a gas chamber if they ruled this land but, as for now, they’re pleased as punch that she’s alive and well and playing the useful idiot on the highest court in our land.
The fourth arrow would be academia. It trains the Ginsburgs and ACLUites of the world and inculcates them with the anti-American, anti-Christian, left-wing ideologies that make them the bull in the china shop of American values they are.
The fifth would be the multiculturalists. They brainwash Americans with the notion that all cultures are morally equal and that we shouldn’t make judgements about cultures, except, ironically, our own. In so doing they dull our powers of discernment and render us either unable or at least unwilling to see crucial distinctions between cultures, and the danger posed to us by allowing Islamic culture to infiltrate ours. And by encouraging immigrants to not assimilate into our nation they have created the current environment, one in which we are divided because we have numerous subcultures in the USA that are all vying for primacy. And the IFs laugh because they know they don’t have to worry about this in their lands, where it’s their way or the camel caravan.
The sixth would be the feminists. The IFs would put them in Burkas and make sure they were seen and not heard if they had dominion over them. But this doesn’t seem to matter to these bitter shrews, who join the chorus of voices that want to deconstruct our culture and who seem to fear pro-life Christians more than pro-death IFs.
The seventh and eighth are the print and television media. The IFs must think that this de facto propaganda arm of theirs is a gift from Allah. After all, the media do their best to present America in a negative light while they play-down stories about Muslim transgressions. And just imagine how the IFs laugh when witnessing our hand-wringing over Abu Ghraib, for they are harsh men. They live in cultures where draconian punishments are the order of the day; where hands and heads do roll on a regular basis. So what do you suppose they think of our fixation on acts that pale in comparison? I suspect that they hold us in contempt for being effete dolts. It’s not, however, that the media are all that pro-Muslim – it’s just that they’re anti-tradition and instinctively sympathize with anything traditionalists oppose. Right now they’re whitewashing Islam, but prior to the fall of the Berlin wall it was communism and in the future it will be some other evil force du jour.
Another arrow – albeit a corpulent one – would be comedian and film-maker Michael Moore and his comrades in Hollywood. He recently made a film titled Fahrenheit 9-11, a work that demonizes the Bush administration and is fraught with lies. The IFs laugh at this because when Muslim writer Salmon Rushdie wrote a book critical of Islam, Muslim leaders issued a fatwah, or death sentence, on him. But they know that Moore doesn’t have to fear that here. In fact, he’ll be able to continue to make money and do their bidding.
The tenth arrow would be the pro-immigration lobby, comprising groups like the National Immigration Forum and certain business interests. They work assiduously to ensure that our immigration laws will not be enforced. This happens for a variety of reasons: because they see themselves as Democrats first and Americans second and want to import their voters, because they see themselves as members of a certain ethnicity first and Americans second and want to import their culture, or because they see themselves as businessmen first and Americans second and want to import their fruit-pickers. Regardless, the IFs see them as Americans and targets first and useful pawns second.
The eleventh arrow is virtually every politician in our land. They capitulate to the above groups, ensuring that our borders will remain like sieves through which terrorists can be afforded almost unfettered access to our nation. And it’s not that we can’t secure a border – we do a very good job in Korea at the 38th parallel. The real problem is the feckless, cowardly nature of these politicians, which makes them pander to the Hispanic vote and recoil at the prospect of being called a racist with a fear that tells you that their spines are as gelatinized as their hearts and brains are ossified.
The twelfth arrow would be civil rights groups, in whose employ you will find shyster lawyers who routinely sue the government on behalf of suspected terrorists, garden-variety criminals, and whatever other miscreants they happen to find crawling around while plumbing the depths of the sewer these great legal minds inhabit. And please, spare me the lecture about how “we’re demonstrating to the arab world how the rule of law must prevail in a civilized society.” I respect those who would fall on their swords or go to the mat in order to defend the sanctity of the Constitution. But I cannot abide social-engineers to whom our Constitution is not the supreme law of the land, but simply a vehicle.
This is why this war against Islamic extremists always seems to me like a one step forwards and two steps back situation, as the thirteen arrows trained on us come ever closer to puncturing the heart of our nation. And I suspect that the IFs – being more sophisticated than some would give them credit for – know that we’re divided and that we can be played against each other. They’re wagering that the eagle will commit suicide before it can vanquish them.
And, oh, who is the last arrow? It would be most of the rest of us, the people who just go about living their daily lives; who work, play, eat fast food, and who don’t have explicitly stated political or social agendas. You see, we’re guilty of letting all this happen. Our sin is one of omission, induced by indifference. We’re the easiest prey because when you’re asleep at the wheel the most vicious curves can easily determine your ultimate destination. And the IFs laugh at us because they know that our oblivion will ensure our oblivion. In fact, I can almost hear them say, “When we chop off the heads of the Americans, their corrupt passions will forge the sword we use.”
